The Mizzou Aquatic Center, which was new space in this project, included a 50M x 25Y competitive pool with 2 movable bulkheads and a separate diving well with 25Y lap lanes, 2-3M springboards, 2-1M springboards a 1, 3, 5, 7.5 & 10M diving tower, bubble system and separate hot tub. The Mizzou Aquatic Center also houses spectator seating for 1,000, concession, visiting team locker rooms, varsity team locker rooms, conference rooms, offices and other support spaces. The Mizzou Aquatic Center is outfitted with Colorado Time System and Display equipment to include a full-color scoreboard and a full-color video board.
In addition to the competitive component the Tiger Grotto is a 91,000 gallon leisure pool which is in a completely separate room. The leisure pool includes a zero depth entry, current channel, vortex and water fall. Additional amenities include a raised hot tub which will seat 30, a dry-sauna and steam room. Students can be found lounging in the Tiger Grotto and watching TV on the video board.
The last body of water at the Student Recreation Complex is Truman’s Pond which is adjacent to Tiger Grotto, but outdoors. This body of water is approximately 60,000 gallons and is open April-September; with a bubble pool, spill over water fall and 2′ bench seating in the water, this pool is also a favorite of students at Mizzou.
Ballard*King and Associates provided programming assistance, market analysis, concept design review, operations analysis and overall project assessment, for the student recreation center. With the architect’s basic concept plan, B*K developed an operations plan for the proposed center focusing on the planning efforts for the new aquatic center.
